Wikipedia is a top source for people to find information quickly today and though anyone can create or edit a wikipedia article, it is generally trustworthy information.

An article featured on a Small Business Search Marketing site explains some key benefits to having a Wikipedia presence.

1. Great exposure. Wikipedia is a heavily used web site, and having an article about your company means more exposure, more eyeballs, and so forth.

2. Reputation management. As I mentioned above, your Wikipedia article will probably rank on page one for your company name, and that helps with your online reputation management.

3. Increased trust. There’s no underestimating the need to earn trust, both from customers and search engines. A Wikipedia article can help with both, I believe.

It is important to understand that not everyone can have their own Wikipedia page. There are quality standards and notability standards that need to be met or the article is promptly deleted.

Contact us (CLICK HERE) to see if your business would qualify for it’s own Wikipedia presence and let us take care of it for you.

The National Football League is the most profitable and powerful professional sports league in the US by far. With the recent popularity of social media they have adopted very stringent rules and regulations for all members of the league. Coaches, players, referees, and even media have some limitations. Here is a brief synopsis of the current social media rules from the NFL.

The use of Twitter and other social media platforms by players, coaches and other team personnel on game days, prohibiting such use beginning 90 minutes before a game until following the conclusion of media interviews after a game.

The league did not restrict Twitter use by players and coaches on other days.

The NFL issued a written announcement that said in part: “The growth of social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook has created important new ways for the NFL and clubs to communicate and connect with fans. The NFL has been at the forefront of the use of new media and will continue to emphasize innovative and appropriate use of these new forms of communication.”

Players, coaches and other club personnel from using cell phones, computers and other electronic devices on the sideline, in the locker room and in the coaches’ booth in the press box between pregame warmups through the conclusion of a game.

NFL officials felt the need to issue an amended set of rules because of the prevalent use of Twitter by many players

That’s prohibited under this policy, which says that “coaches, players and football operations personnel are permitted under league policy and with club permission to use social media on game day during specific time periods before and after games… up to 90 minutes before kickoff and after the game following media interviews,” according to the NFL’s written release.

The NFL banned updates during that period by a player, coach or team official “or anyone representing” one of those people.

The league barred its game officials and members of its officiating department from using social media platforms at any time.

The NFL also indicated that its previous policies prohibiting play-by-play descriptions of games while they’re in progress apply to Twitter and other social media platforms.

If I was in charge of the most powerful professional sports league I would do the same. What do you think? Thanks for reading. Thanks for sharing. -DL

According to the Associated Press, U.S. magazine sales at newsstands and other retail outlets continued to slip in the first half of 2010. So-called single-copy sales fell 5.6 percent to roughly 32.5 million in the January-June period compared with the previous year. The decline had been 9 percent in the last six months of 2009 and 12 percent in the first half of 2009, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

What is driving this? I think there is no doubt it is the plethora of information and entertainment available online via social media and other websites. But are magazines dying? Well not if they are keeping up with the times. Magazines that are moving towards the online world with iPad apps and interactive websites may be able to leverage the lack of newsstand sales into new customers and fans via these mediums. When was the last time you sought out and purchased a magazine at a retail outlet? As for myself, at least five years.

Could the decline also have to do with the relentless, not so subtle, advertising in articles and pictures throughout magazines in the last few years? Consumers seeking information and entertainment in 2010 are much more savvy than these publishers are giving us credit for. We can now get information and entertainment about exactly what we want, whenever we want it.

Magazines better start innovating via Social Media, apps, and interactive websites or they will be dead. Thanks for reading. Thanks for sharing. -DL

Vacations, we all get excited about them. But do not tell your Facebook friends and Twitter followers about it before you go or while you are there. It is an open invitation to have people burglarize your house. Seems kind of obvious since everyone knows that you are gone for an extended period of time, but I see it day after day. Posting pictures? Do it when you get back. There have been several stories about random friends breaking in to a person’s house after a Facebook or Twitter post about there whereabouts. I mean how well do you really know your online “friends”. Please do not do it. We all want to see your pictures and hear your stories about your cool vacation, just wait until you get back. Thanks for reading. Thanks for sharing. -DL

Facebook, we all are on it often. After all it’s the world’s second most popular website. If you are on Facebook regularly, I am sure you have been involved in a Facebook chat. That small little window on the lower right hand side of your Facebook page can be fun, annoying, or downright maddening. From that old high school friend that is so bored they try to strike up a conversation every time you log on, to the pseudo stalker that blows up your wall and appears to be waiting for you to enter the chat. What can you do? Did you know that you can turn it off? Here is how you do it: in the chat box, click options, then click “go offline”. Now isn’t that nice? A peaceful, relaxing time on Facebook. So, will you keep it on or turn it off? Thanks for reading. Thanks for sharing. -DL

I have always been an information junkie. I started reading the paper in my early teens on a daily basis, cover to cover. As I got older I subscribed to four newspapers and read most or all of them everyday. When my wife and I had our first child five years ago I narrowed it down to two papers due to obvious time constraints. When we had our second child three years ago I was down to one paper. When I joined Twitter about a year ago I started following journalists, newspapers, sportswriters, blogger’s, tech sites, etc..you get the picture. I then started realizing I was reading tommorow’s news today. Instantaneous information, I was an addict. I would look at Twitter on my iPhone right after I woke up, when I used to go get the newspaper right after I woke up. I noticed the newspapers were piling up in my driveway like I was on vacation. I did not want to cancel my newspaper subscription for tradition sake. But about three months ago I did just that, I cancelled that sucker. We all know that there have been several newspapers that have gone out of business in the last few years. That is my personal story of one of the ways it is happening. Thanks for reading. Thanks for sharing. -DL

If you are an average Facebook user you may see some of your friends posts that indicate they have “checked in” somewhere on Foursquare. Do you know what it is? It is in a category of Social Media called “location based services” (LBS). Here is how it works:

1) A mobile phone’s GPS reads your location and finds places nearby, like restaurants, retail stores, parks, and many other places people go.

2) Then a user of Foursquare “check’s in” on their mobile phone with the Foursquare application at the place they are at and adds a comment about what and / or why they are there. This can be shared on other Social Media sites with those friends / followers.

3) A Foursquare user can earn badges and rewards for checking in at multiple places and certain kinds of places, so it is a bit of a game as well. But the most coveted aspect that a Foursquare user can attain is being a “mayor” of a place. It just means they have checked most often and most recently at a place. So whenever anyone else check’s in at that place they see the mayor and their profile.

4) So besides the fun game like aspect of Foursquare, why else would one keep checking in? Because as Foursquare grows in popularity, businesses are offering discounts and specials for nearby users, multiple check in’s and mayors.

So what is the future of Foursquare? I think it is big. Imagine how comments or suggestions by other Foursquare users about a place or business affect a person’s decision on where to spend their money? The discounts or specials offered by businesses on Foursquare will be invaluable because their potential customers are blocks away and about to make a decision on where to eat or shop. Foursquare, check it out. Thanks for reading. Thanks for sharing. -DL
